Subclass 482 — Skills in Demand Visa (Temporary)
The Subclass 482 enables approved employers to sponsor skilled overseas workers to fill positions where suitably qualified Australian workers are not available. In many cases, this visa can lead to permanent residency through the Subclass 186 visa.
- Temporary visa with streams based on occupation and salary level
- Requires an approved Standard Business Sponsor
- Mandatory Labour Market Testing (LMT)
- Occupation must be on the relevant skilled occupation list
- Work restrictions apply to the sponsoring employer
Subclass 186 — Employer Nomination Scheme (Permanent)
A direct pathway to permanent residency for skilled workers nominated by an Australian employer. Streams include Temporary Residence Transition (TRT), Direct Entry, and Labour Agreement.
- Permanent visa with full work and residency rights
- Requires employer nomination and position approval
- Skills, qualifications, and experience must meet criteria
- Age and English requirements apply (with limited exemptions)
- Long-term settlement, access to Medicare, and a pathway to citizenship
Subclass 494 — Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional)
Allows regional Australian employers to sponsor skilled workers for positions in designated regional areas. After meeting residency and income requirements, holders may transition to permanent residency via the Subclass 191 visa.
- 5-year provisional visa
- Mandatory work in regional Australia
- Labour Market Testing applies
- Access to permanent residency through Subclass 191
Subclass 407 — Training Visa
Allows individuals to come to Australia for structured workplace-based training or professional development. Designed where the primary purpose is skills development rather than employment — commonly used for occupational training, capacity building, and professional advancement. Can be a stepping stone to employer-sponsored pathways.
- Temporary visa (generally up to 2 years)
- Requires an approved training sponsor and structured training plan
- Not intended for full-time employment
- Suitable for recent graduates and professionals enhancing skills
